DERMAPEN™ SKIN NEEDLING
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as Skin Needling and Collagen Induction Therapy, uses a micro-needling device to create microscopic ‘pin prick’ wounds in the skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing process and boost collagen production. As your skin repairs, the production of collagen and elastin is triggered to give an almost immediate plumping effect.
This is an ideal procedure to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, acne scarring and stretch marks. The increase in collagen can also increase your skin’s volume and help the texture to look and feel much smoother.
Our microneedling system of choice is the DermaPen™. Dermapen™ was the original microneedling system made available to the world market. Over the last few years, this has made Dermapen™ the most widely used system by practitioners, as well as the most searched for automated needling treatment as it is safer and more effective in piercing the skin than traditional skin needling rollers, has a superior effect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation, effectively treats hard-to-reach places and promotes scarless healing and natural collagen production.

FAQs
As the DermaPen™ stamps over the skin, it creates micro-point punctures. This controlled damage stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Thus, the skin is tricked into repairing itself. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. You encourage your skin to continue healing through this Micro Needling process. The process of Micro Needling skin remodelling can go on for months after each DermaPen™ treatment.
Very few side effects are associated with Micro Needling treatment. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (approx. 24hrs), rapid healing and requires only simple after-care. Immediately after the procedure, you may find that your skin looks slightly-moderately red and feels tender, much like sunburn, but this should resolve itself within a few hours or sometimes days for some.
We would advise against DermaPen™ treatment if you have an active skin infection, chronic skin disorder, blood clotting problems, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions.
At Sheer Laser Clinic, DermaPen™ treatments are only ever delivered by one of our highly trained Cosmetic Nurses or Aesthetic Practitioners, as we believe it is only safe to be administered by someone who is adequately trained.
Following on from your consultation, we would start your treatment by cleansing your skin and applying a topical anaesthetic cream for approximately 30 minutes. This will help to numb your skin and make sure that the Micro Needling is a comfortable experience for you. Once the anaesthetic cream has taken effect, we will disinfect your skin and begin the skin needling treatment.
Skin needling is carried out using a hand-held device with a single-use head featuring a number of micro-needles. Each pinprick or microscopic channel is approximately 0.1mm in width, which means that they quickly close over and heal. The DermaPen™ is moved around the treatment area diagonally, horizontally and vertically to ensure the treatment area is covered evenly.
Once the procedure is complete, we will gently cleanse your skin once more and apply cold compresses to close your pores and some serums to help with recovery and your skin’s health.
The procedure is relatively pain free, with the exception of mild discomfort. You may notice some soreness in the treated area, but this should subside quickly. Depending on the depth of treatment, it is possible to feel a little sensitivity.
You will be given clear aftercare instructions when you undergo Micro Needling treatment at the Clinic. After your treatment, your skin will appear red and flushed; a normal sign that the treatment is working and will subside within a few days. SPF 30 should be worn daily following on from the treatment for at least two weeks.
It is also recommended that after your treatment, you maintain your overall skin health by using a cosmeceutical skincare regime to protect your skin from further damaging factors such as free radical and sun damage to help promote and achieve optimum results.
We recommend a programme of three to six treatments four to six weeks apart; however, this will depend on your skin condition. Your therapist will devise a bespoke treatment plan, which may include other treatments, to achieve the best result.
Common side effects experienced with the DermaPen™ will usually subside within 24-48 hours. They include redness, stinging, itching, and tightness of the skin. The skin will be red in appearance, similar way to a sunburn and will also be tight. This will settle down greatly after a few hours and within 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.
We recommend that you come into the Sheer Laser Clinic for a free one-to-one consultation so that you can ask questions and get a clear understanding of how DermaPen™ treatment works and whether it would be right for you. This consultation gives us a chance to assess your individual concerns and create a fully personalised treatment plan for you. We may recommend another treatment if there’s one that we believe would give you a better outcome; we may even advise you against treatment if we feel this to be in your best interest. At all times, we ensure that you receive an an honest assessment that puts your needs first.
Contraindications and precautions include: keloid or raised scarring, history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions, history of actinic (solar) keratosis, history of Herpes Simplex infections, presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include: scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities, Rosacea and blood clotting problems, active bacterial or fungal infection, immunosuppression, Scars less than 6 months old and facial fillers in the past 6 months.
Both devices can be used for all areas but the DermaPen™ can also be used for small, curved and harder to reach areas. Rollers rely on manual application and are dependent on hand pressure; therefore the depth of the micro point punctures may vary, whereas the DermaPen™ depth of penetration is set precisely with an electronic dial. There can also be lateral trauma to the skin when the needles on a roller pull out of the skin as the wheel turns, however DermaPen™ relies only on vertical needle action so there is no risk of lateral trauma.
Skin needling can be safely performed on all skin colours and types. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. This is then advantage skin needling has over lasers and chemical peels.
The first step
of your journey is to book a non-obligatory consultation giving you the opportunity to discuss your area of concern, the treatment you are considering, and your suitability for treatment.
